At some or the other point in life we all have wanted to be pilots. The beauty of the planes, their speed never fails to mesmerize us. Being in the Indian Air Force not only saves you the hefty sum of money needed for the pilot training but also gives you a chance to fly in the best fighter air crafts in the world. It is a life of purpose be it being a part of the strikes like the Balakot airstrike or providing assistance to the army in the Siachen glaciers or disaster reliefs. It is not only the pilots who form the Airforce, a large number of people work at the backend to keep the machines in the air like the Engineers, ATCs, Logistics etc. One gets a chance to be a commissioned officer and dawn the uniform at the age of 21 and be the best in the business.  In this article we will tell you how to join the Indian Air Force through different entries and at various stages of life and educational qualifications.

Join Indian Air Force Through 10+2 Entry:

NDA Entry:-

  • Entry: NDA Entry
  • Age: 16 ½ to 19 years at the time of course commencement.
  • Educational Qualification: 12th Class pass of the 10+2 pattern of School Education or equivalent examination conducted by a State Education Board or a University.
  • Gender: Male
  • Selection Procedure: Candidates will have to appear for SSB interview after clearing the written exam for NDA conducted by UPSC.
  • Place of Training: 3 years at National Defence Academy, Pune and 1 year at Indian Air Force Academy, Hyderabad.
  • Duration of Training: 4 years.
  • Stipend during Training: Rs 56,100 per month during 1-year training at Indian Air Force Academy, Hyderabad.
  • Type of Commission: Permanent.

*The entry through NDA is open for Flying branch, Ground duty (Tech) and Ground duty (Non Tech). All cadets of Flying branch and Ground duty (tech) would be offered B Tech in NDA and cadets of Ground duty (Non-tech) would be offered B Sc degree.

AFMC Entry:

  • Entry: AFMC Entry
  • Age: 17 years in December of the year of application.
  • Educational Qualification: 12th Class pass of the 10+2 pattern of School Education or equivalent examination with minimum 60% aggregate in Physics, Chemistry and Biology and not less than 50% in any of the 5 subjects.                                    
  • Gender: Male and Female
  • Selection Procedure: Candidate will have to appear in NEET 2020. based on the marks obtained in NEET shortlisted candidates will be called for ToELR test and interview
  • Place of Training: AFMC, Pune.
  • Duration of Training: 4 ½ years of MBBS and 1 year of internship.
  • Stipend during Training: Approximately Rs. 3000 per month.
  • Type of Commission: Depends on the vacancy.

Join Indian Air Force After Graduation:-

Entry For Flying Branch:

CDSE Entry (PC):-

  • Entry: CDSE Entry (PC)
  • Age: 20 to 24 years at the time of course commencement (Upper age limit for candidates holding valid and current Commercial Pilot Licence issued by DGCA (India) is relaxable upto 26 years) are eligible.
  • Educational Qualification:Degree of a recognized University (with Physics and Mathematics at 10+2 level) or Bachelor of Engineering.
  • Gender: Male
  • Selection Procedure: Candidates will have to appear for SSB interview after clearing the written exam (CDSE) conducted by UPSC.
  • Place of Training: Indian Air Force Academy, Hyderabad.
  • Duration of Training: 18 months.
  • Stipend during Training: Rs. 56,100 per month.
  • Type of Commission: Permanent.

AFCAT Entry (SSC):-

  • Entry: AFCAT Entry (SSC)
  • Age: 20 to 24 years at the time of course commencement (Upper age limit for candidates holding valid and current Commercial Pilot Licence issued by DGCA (India) is relaxable upto 26 years) are eligible.
  • Educational Qualification: Degree of a recognised University (with Physics and Mathematics at 10+2 level) or Bachelor of Engineering.
  • Gender: Male and Female.
  • Selection Procedure: Candidates will have to appear for SSB interview after clearing the written exam called Air Force Common Admission Test conducted by the Indian Air Force.
  • Place of Training: Indian Air Force Academy, Hyderabad.
  • Duration of Training: 18 months.
  • Stipend during Training: Rs. 56,100 per month.
  • Type of Commission: Short Service Commission.

NCC Special Entry (SSC):-

  • Entry: NCC Special Entry (SSC)
  • Age: 20 to 24 years at the time of course commencement (Upper age limit for candidates holding valid and current Commercial Pilot Licence issued by DGCA (India) is relaxable upto 26 years) are eligible.
  • Educational Qualification: Degree of a recognised University or Bachelor of Engineering(with a minimum of 60% in Physics and Mathematics at 10+2 level).
  • Gender: Male and Female.
  • Selection Procedure: Those candidates who have acquired NCC Air Wing Senior Division ‘C’ certificate and fulfil the educational qualification will be called for SSB interview directly after application.
  • Place of Training: Indian Air Force Academy, Hyderabad.
  • Duration of Training: 18 months.
  • Stipend during Training: Rs. 56,100 per month.

Non-Flying Branch (Technical):

Depending upon the choice of branch in graduation candidates will have two choices i.e. Aeronautical Engineer (Electronics) or Aeronautical Engineer (Mechanical).

AFCAT Entry:-

  • Entry: AFCAT Entry
  • Age: 20 to 26 years at the time of course commencement.
  • Educational Qualification for Aeronautical Engineer (Electronics): Candidates with a minimum of 60% marks each in Physics and Mathematics at 10+2 level and a minimum of four years degree graduation/integrated post-graduation qualification in Engineering/ Technology from recognized University OR cleared Sections A and B examination of Associate Membership of Institution of Engineers (India) or Aeronautical Society of India or Graduate membership examination of the Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers by actual studies with a minimum of 60% marks or equivalent in the following disciplines:
1. Communication Engineering.
2. Computer Engineering & Application.
3. Computer Science Engineering/Technology.
4. Electrical and Computer Engineering.
5. Electrical and Electronics Engineering.
6. Electrical Engineering.
7. Electronics Engineering/ Technology.
8. Electronics Science and Engineering.

  • Educational Qualification for Aeronautical Engineer (Mechanical): Candidates with a minimum of 60% marks each in Physics and Mathematics at 10+2 level and a minimum of four years degree graduation/integrated post-graduation qualification in Engineering/Technology from recognised University OR cleared Sections A & B examination of Associate Membership of Institution of Engineers (India) or Aeronautical Society of India by actual studies with a minimum of 60% marks or equivalent in the following disciplines:-
1. Aerospace Engineering.
2. Aeronautical Engineering.
3. Aircraft Maintenance Engineering.  
4. Mechanical Engineering.

  • Selection Procedure: Candidates will have to appear for SSB interview after clearing the written exam called Air Force Common Admission Test along with Engineering Knowledge Test conducted by the Indian Air Force.
  • Place of Training: Indian Air Force Academy, Hyderabad and Air Force Technical College, Bangalore.
  • Duration of Training: 18 months.
  • Stipend during Training: Rs. 56,100 per month.
  • Type of Commission: Depends on the vacancies.

Non-Flying Branch (Non-Technical):

AFCAT Entry:-

  • Entry: AFCAT entry.
  • Age: 20 to 26 years at the time of course commencement.
  • Educational Qualification (Administration): Graduate Degree (Minimum three years degree course) in any discipline from a recognised university with a minimum of 60% marks or equivalent or cleared section A & B examination of Associate Membership of Institution of Engineers (India) or Aeronautical Society of India from a recognised university with a minimum of 60% marks or equivalent.
  • Educational Qualification (Logistics): Graduate Degree (Minimum three years degree course) in any discipline from a recognised university with a minimum of 60% marks or equivalent or cleared section A & B examination of Associate Membership of Institution of Engineers (India) or Aeronautical Society of India from a recognised university with a minimum of 60% marks or equivalent.
  • Educational Qualification (Accounts): Graduate Degree (Minimum three years degree course) in Commerce discipline from a recognised university with a minimum of 60% marks or equivalent.
  • Gender: Male and Female.
  • Selection Procedure: Candidates will have to appear for SSB interview after clearing the written exam called Air Force Common Admission Test conducted by the Indian Air Force.
  • Place of Training: Indian Airforce Academy, Hyderabad.
  • Duration of Training: 12 months.
  • Stipend during Training: Rs. 56,100 per month.

Join Indian Air Force Through Post-Graduation Entry:

AFCAT (Metrology):-

  • Entry: AFCAT (Metrology)
  • Age: 20 to 26 years at the time of course commencement.
  • Educational Qualification:Post Graduation Degree in any science stream/Mathematics/Statistics/Geography/Oceanography/Agricultural Meteorology/Ecology & Environment/Geo-physics/Environmental Biology/ Computer Applications/Environmental Science/ Applied Physics. All candidates should have scored a minimum 50% marks in aggregate in all papers of Post-Graduation put together (provided Maths & Physics were studied at Graduation level with a minimum of 55% marks in both).
  • Gender: Male and Female.
  • Selection Procedure: Candidates will have to appear for SSB interview after clearing the written exam called Air Force Common Admission Test conducted by the Indian Air Force.
  • Place of Training: Indian Airforce Academy, Hyderabad.
  • Duration of Training: 12 months.
  • Stipend during Training: Rs. 56,100 per month.

*As a Meteorology Branch Officer you would be involved handling the latest satellite imagery and state-of-the-art monitoring equipment, you would render specific advice to the operators on all aspects of weather.

AFCAT (Education):-

  • Entry: AFCAT (Education)
  • Age: 20 to 26 years at the time of course commencement.
  • Educational Qualification: MA/M.Scin English/Physics/Mathematics/Chemistry/Statistics/International Relations/International Studies/Defence Studies/Psychology/Computer Science/IT/Management/MBA/MCA/ Mass Communication/Journalism/Public Relations with minimum 50 % marks in aggregate in all papers put together in Post-Graduation (minimum two years programme) and 60% marks in Graduation  (both recognised by UGC/Competent Accreditation Authority).
  • Gender: Male and Female.
  • Selection Procedure: Candidates will have to appear for SSB interview after clearing the written exam called Air Force Common Admission Test conducted by the Indian Air Force.
  • Place of Training: Indian Airforce Academy, Hyderabad.
  • Duration of Training: 12 months.
  • Stipend during Training: Rs. 56,100 per month.

***LLB qualified and integrated/ dual degree candidates may get an opportunity to be employed on legal duties of the IAF (after commissioning).

NOTE: 1.) Selection in all the entries is subject to vacancies, medical fitness and final merit list.

2.) The final merit list is made by combining the written marks and the marks obtained in the SSB interview. In case there was no written exam for a particular entry the final merit list will be based on the marks obtained in the SSB interview.
