20 Facts about Indian Military academy (IMA)

Indian Military Academy (IMA), Deharadun is the officer training academy of Indian Army. Since its establishment in 1932, it has won many accolades in India and abroad for the quality of Cadets it has produced. We are presenting 20 interesting facts about the Indian Military Academy.

  1. As a result of Indian leader’s persuasion during the first round table conference in 1930 in London, the British government agree to set up the chairmanship of Field Marshal sir Philip Chetwode. In 1931, the committee recommended for the establishment of an Indian military academy in Dehradun.
  1. Indian Military academy was inaugurated on 10th December 1932.
  2. The IMA is located in Dehradun in Uttrakhand. The academy is spread across over 1400 acres near the famous tons valley.
  3. The IMA motto is Valour and Wisdom.
  4. The First batch of 40 Gentleman cadets began their training on 1st October 1932.
  5. The First batch of cadets to pass out of the academy in December 1934.
  6. The first batch of IMA cadets is known as the pioneers.
  7. The Pioneers future Army Chiefs of three countries, Sam Manekshaw India, Smith Dun Burma and Muhammad Musa Pakistan.
  8. Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw was the 8th chief of the Army staff in independent India and he was the pioneer in IMA.
  9. Brigedier L.P Collins was appointed the first Commandant.
  10. Post independence Brigedier Thakur  Mahadeo Singh was appointed the Indian commandant of the IMA.
  11. A trainee on admission to the IMA is referred to as a Gentleman Cadet.
  12. Over 50000 foreign cadets were trained in the IMA. Some of the countries that have sent cadets to the IMA to get trained are – Bhutan, Ghana, Yemen, Tonga, Nigeria, Singapore, Afghanistan etc.
  13.   The IMA War memorial, with its pillars and columns of Dholpur stone. Pays homage to the alumni of the academy who have fallen in the course of action. At the sanctum of the memorial was inaugurated by Field Marshal Manekshaw on 17th November 1999, just weeks after the Kargil war.
  14. Apart from the daily physical training, route marches and lectures, the IMA provides a variety of training program for all over development of the cadets. Program like Photography, seminars, tour etc…
  15. IMA cadets are organized as a Regiment with four training battalions. These battalions are named on four generals of the Indian Army, namely – Thimayya, Manekshaw, Bhagat and Cariappa.
  16. In 1976, the four battalions of the IMA were renamed the Carippa, Thimayya, Manekshaw and bhagat Battalion with two companies each in honour of Field Marshal Kodandera Madappa Cariappa, Genral Kodendera Subayya Thimayya, Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw and Lt. Genral Premindra Singh Bhagat.
  17. There is on more battalion Siachen Battalion for ACC cadets.    
  18. Is the official documentary was made by Dipti Bhalla and kunal varma and gives a glimps of the IMA culture, tradition and training regime.  The Hritikh Roshan Bollywood movie Lakshya 2004 was partly short in IMA.
  19. Tun Hussein On- third Prime Minister of Malaysia was alumni of the IMA.
